Editing So Far

The process of our film so far is in it's final stages. We had uploaded all of our work to final cut, and it is just changing backgrounds and editing our green screen footage which we need to do. As a group we have worked hard, although our music video has been very demanding and there have been hiccups along the way. Our work got deleted, therefore we had to re-upload and edit again which lost us a lot of time. The feedback we have had on our work is positive. I feel that our video is good because it is unique, we have a lot of screen screen and text in our work, also there are always different clips. Our clips are very short and individual, and match with the music, which in our case looks effective. I am pleased with our work so far.

Filming so far..

The filming process so far is going well. There has been some hiccups along the way, such as when some people in our group wore wrong clothing for the green screen, therefore the green counteracted with the screen and the effects didn't work properly. I think we have worked hard so far, and are working well as a group, we are dividing ourselves with two people filming, and the others editing or vice versa. I think we are heading in the right direction!

Digipak- 1st Edition

This is the front and back cover of the digipak.

This is the inside cover of the digipak.

These were the first edition of the digipak whgich our group made, however after looking at them after making our music video, we found that these didn't look as professional as they could. We also thought that we used too much black and not enough colour, therefore they don't entirely fit with the genre.

My initial Ideas for a digipak

This is my initial ideas  for the outside of a digipak. I have used bright colours because they need to be vibrant for the pop-electro genre. I have included spaces for different photos, which are both individual photographs, and photographs in a group. I have included a song list on the back, and a barcode.

Prop List

The props we will use are the following:-

plain white t shirts and we plan to draw on them in bright colours.
big jewellery.
headphones.
graffiti/spray paints.
Big Sunglasses
We will need them from Monday the 31st october til Monday 14th November.
these similar items have been used in previous Luciana videos.

I think our props list ties in with the media theory of Richard Dyer (1997) of how we represent ourselves through objects. The use of props which we have included show the self-image which we present to the audience, is unique and in fashion, we have decided to be bold and strong, which is exactly what the Pop-Electro genre is about.

Production Schedule

Monday 31st October- We will begin filming today, the filming will take place on the green screen.

Tuesday 1st November- This will be filiming at the green screen also.

Thursday 3rd November- We will film in wellington today, by the brick wall.

Monday 7th November- We will film in wellington today, in the high street.

Tuesday 8th November- We will film in the woods and on the field.

Thursday 10th November- We will film by graphitti today.

Monday 14th November- Today we will use to film any extra pieces which need to be filmed.

Tuesday 15th November- We will begin editing our music video from now till the end of the project.

Thursday 15th December- We will have completed our music video now.

Location Report

The locations which we chosen to film in are the following:-

  •  Using the green screen- this will allow us to have background images which are unique and effective,such as flashing backgrounds, images with paint splats, famous places such as 'New York' at night. This makes our video more interesting;
  • By a brick wall - This is because although a brick wall is fairly normal/boring, we can use special effects which will be enhanced due to the pattern on the wall. An effect will be like colours running across the wall.
  • By Graffiti- this fits in with the genre which we are working in, we also think that graphitti is often linked to the teenage years, and therefore our target audience. The graphitti which we will use will emphasise the meaning of the song, or create the words such as 'I like that' which is a key part of the song.
  • In the woods- this is a different and unique location for this music video, and it allows us to be creative and have various shots in a different location.
  • Down a high street- to create the effect of a busy town with lots of people surrounding, this will allow us to create an 'crazy' atmosphere where no body knows what is going on.
  • On a field- This is so that we can lie on the field and use shots such as 'birds eye view',

As a group, we have decided to film in various locations, as we think this will be effective for our music video because it won’t looks repetitive and boring. We have chosen to film during the daylight because this means the backing lighting will be bright and will compliment both our costumes and editing effects. Although in certain times, we will use the green sceen to use famous places as backgrounds to present the teenage nightlife.

Reflecting On My Research And Project So Far..

During the period of time which I have been back at college, I have been researching into the music genre of Pop- Electro. I have looked into many pop artists, and researched their digi-paks, music videos and websites. This was to allow me to see how they were represented within the music industry. Through looking at music artists such as Rihanna, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj, I have realised that these artists are portrayed in a manor which allows the teenage age range to aspire too. They are shown as types of role models for the younger generation. Artists are also used as style icons, for example, in music videos, they generally wear the latest fashion clothes, which makes the target audience also want these clothes.

So far, I feel fairly confident with how my research is piecing together. I think that I am in a good position, having looked into the genre in detail, and understanding why artists are portrayed in the way they are. I also have background with the pop genre, as since growing up, I have always loved this type of music, and have been one of the younger teenage girls, aspiring to be like Beyonce and Christina Aguilara. Therefore this gives me an advantage with my research. I also think that my research has been to a high standard, as I have worked hard to make sure facts which I have learnt are correct, as well as looking into a wide range of genres, to find which genre suits my personal taste best, in order to create a music video.

From looking back at my research from last year, which was based around the opening of a thriller film, I feel that my knowledge and understanding of media texts has improved greatly. I think that in my research , I have gone into much further depth this year, and have allowed myself the opportunity to do well in this subject. I also feel much more in control with this research. This is because last year, I found that I was a bit hesitant at the beginning of the project, however this year, I have thrown myself into my work, and have continued to work hard in order to produce a music video to the best of my ability.

In order to complete my music video to the highest possible standard, I need to research into more music videos, which will allow me to get more ideas for editing effects. I am looking forward to using a wider range of editing techniques and effects within this music video project, as last year in my thriller film, my group and I, didn’t really experiment too much with effects. I am enjoying this year’s project a lot more than last year, as music is a part of everyday life, where it can change your mood instantly, and that is the type of music video which I am aiming to create.

In my A2 level exam, I am feeling fairly confident that I can do well, this is because it allows me to be critical of my work from last year, and compare it with this years work. From looking at my work from last year, I have noticed that some scenes are too long and that there isn’t a wider range of camera shots used. Also I have noticed that the editing techniques aren’t as edgy and creative as they potentially could have been. Therefore these elements, I can talk about in my exam, as well as learning from them, and making my project for this year even better than last year.

Overall, I am enjoying this researching project, as I think it is allowing me to improve both my media studies skills and my researching skills. Therefore I am feeling a lot more confident within this lesson.

Music Video Planning

Our music video will be both narrative and performance, however it will be majority performance. As a group we have worked together to create a visual style for this video. The mise-en-scene for this music video will include props such as:-

  • Big headphones- to express the idea of music, also because these are very popular amongst the age range for our target audience.
  • Big sunglasses- to enhance the features of the face, and make a distinct difference between certain scenes.
  • Big jewellery- because this is fashionable at the moment, and fashion is often associated with music videos.
We will also wear vibrant and bright colours to add more energy to the music video and make it look more interesting. The costumes which we will wear will be random and edgy, this is to add to the energetic feel, and make the people in the music video stand out from everyday people.

We will use a range of camera shots throughout this music video, such as:-

  • Medium shot
  • Close up
  • Wide shot
  • two/three shot
  • high-angled shot
  • low-angled shot
  • panning shots
  • over the shoulder shots
  • Birds eye view
We will use various camera shots to make the music video look more interesting and creative for the audience.

There will be alot of different editing techniques used within our music video, as editing is very popular for the genre we are working in. The editing techniques which we will use will be:-

  • Split screen- where the screen will be divided into four sections.
  • Editing from the green screen
  • Cut
  • Crosscut
  • Neon colours within the scenes
  • slow motion clips- blended together
  • flashing images
  • Text
  • flashing text
The cast of our group is:-

  • Amie
  • Tara
  • Amber
  • Myself (Jess)
The locations which we chosen to film in are:-

  • Green Screen- to allow us to have background images which are unique and effective.
  • By a brick wall
  • By Graphitti- this fits in with the genre which we are working in, we also think that graphitti is often linked to the teenage years, and therefore our target audience.
  • In the woods- this is a different and unique location for this music video, and it allows us to be creative and have various shots in a different location.
  • Down a high street- to create the effect of a busy town with lots of people surrounding.
  • On a field
  • Places in the town park
As a group, we have decided to film in various locations, as we think this will be effective for our music video because it wont looks repetitive and boring. We have chosen to film during the daylight because this means the backing lighting will be bright and will compliment both our costumes and editing effects.

These ideas link to our research because we have took the other music videos into consideration, in order to produce our own ideas.

I think our planning links in with various different media theories. I think our planning links to the Blumler & Katz theory (1974) because of the fact that our music video will allow the audience to have a type of escape from the pressures of everyday life. Also I think they will be able to improve personal relationships through speaking about our music video. Some people may even find personal identity and find links between their own personalities, and the overt personalities which we will present in the video. Another theory which I think our planning links to is the Stuart Hall 'Encoding/Decoding' theory of (1980). This is because of the oppositional position, due to the fact that our genre of our music video is Pop-Electro, which is a subgenre of two main music genres. Therefore the pop genre followers, will expect to see more pop like elements within our music video, however the electro followers will expect more electro elements. As a group, we have discussed this  fact and decided that we will include both of these elements equally.

The Target Audience For Our Music Video

The target audience for the music video which we are creating, is for the age range of 12 years old- 22 years old. This is because the music is energetic and upbeat, therefore is typical for this age range. This genre of music is generally used in venues such as nightclubs, parties and general interest for this age range. I think this age range for our target audience links in with the 'Use and Gratifications' theory which was created by Blumler & Katz (1974). I think this agre range is in need of the diversion from everyday life and pressures, especially as this is the age range for secondary school children, all the way to people at university.  I think our music video allows these people to escape from their pressures, and enjoy the music and lift up their spirits. I think that people could also find personal relationships through socialising about the video with other people.

Analysing 'Skin I'm In' By Static Revenge..

This music video is also from Static Revenge, therefore I am beginning to understand the type of style which he likes in his videos. This video is similar to 'I like that' as it is very technological, and there are many different effects throughout it. The mise en scene within this music video has alot wider range than in the 'happy people' video, as there are more characters, who wear both going out and casual clothes. There are also use of props such as the headphones and magazines at the beginning of the video, also at certain times throughout the opening, both of the main characters shown wear sunglasses, this could be to 'hide' their identities before they begin to feel comfortable with the skin they are in, which is the message behind the song. There are a variety of camera angles throughout this music video such as close up, medium shot, wide shot, two people shot and three people shots. There are also shots which have a deep field of roads in the background with flashing lights, which looks very effective. There are many different editing effects throughout this music video, such as fade in, fade out, split screen and dissolving of the characters. I think the effects in the video make it look more modern and catchy for the audience. Overall, I like this music video because I think it is different and modern.

Analysing 'Happy People' By Static Revenge..

This music video is also from 'Static Revenge'. I have chosen to look at this music video as I feel that i need to research into Static Revenger to understand what his music is about, therefore I will have an idea towards making my own music video. This music video is very cartoon like, the characters shown within the video are all shown in a cartoon-like way. The camera angles throughout this music video are all very smiliar, with occasional change from long shot to medium shot or close up. The mise en scene within this music video is vary varied, there are characters wearing beach wear, tracksuits as well as people wearing casual clothing. In this video there are people dancing and having a good time, this is because the name of the song is 'happy people' therefore the idea is to present people being happy and loving their lifes. There are many different effects used within this music video, however they are all technological effects, where the backgrounds of the video either flashes or changes. There is also use of text used within this music video, which pops up at random intervals during the song. There is use of editing techniques such as split screen, cross cut, cut and fade in and out. Overall I felt that this music video wasn't as good as the 'I like that' video as it wasn't as catchy and interesting.

Analysing 'I Like That' By Static Revenge..

This video is called 'I like that'. I have chosen to analyse this video because I think it is very interesting to watch, as it is modern and creative, and it has alot of effects within it. The mise en scene within this music video is fairly simple. Alot of this video is set outside, near garages and walls and busy roads, this is to emphasise the atmosphere which is wanted by the artists. The main character within this music video is a young woman who is presented as a type of 'wild child', with messy hair, revealing clothes in some scenes, bright lipstick, big rings and also glittery gloves in one part of the video. I think this character is portrayed in this way during the video because it makes the video more exciting and also makes people want to watch. Another reason for this could be because of the style today, as currently the style for 'going out' is big hair and bright lipstick, therefore it fits in within fashion and style of today. There are also two men shown within this video, who are shown wearing a suit, this presents the idea that the men have authority and power over the woman. There is also props used within this video, such as a pen which is used to write the lyrics 'I Like That' across the woman's chest, the same lyrics are also written across a garage during this video. Another prop used is a green apple, this is used when the singer talks about 'New York' as 'The Big Apple'. The colours used throughout this video are very bright and vibrant, and there are many different effects used. This music video has many technical effects, such as the colour figures of the characters. There aren't many different camera shots within this music video, however, there are wide shot, medium shot, long shot, close up and high angled shot used throughout this video. The medium shot was the most common shot used throughout this, personally I feel that the shots were too repetitive, and a wider range of shots would have improved the video. There are many different edits within this video, there is use of cut, cross cut. There is also use of split screen, where the screen is split up into four sections, which looks very effective. There is also many effects where the colours follow people, and create cartoon like figures, which equally looks effective. Overall I liked this music video, as I found that it was unique and modern.

The History Of The Pop-Electro Genre..

The term pop music means popular music, it has erythematic  and melodies and often has an electronic sound to it, the term was first used in 1926 but it emerged out of rock and roll music in the 1950’s in the USA and UK and can often be categorised with a verse and repeated chorus. Often the pop music conventions are things such as a lot of color, stylists as they are very in particular about clothes they wear to create the right look, this can be anything from simple clothing to more formal, for example most females in a pop  Genre wear skirts or dresses, and a lot of people in bands wear matching colours. Sometimes pop music can have very complex music videos to make it popular, so people get interested and enjoy watching them, making their fan base grow. All this is key as it is reliant on their popularity and appealing to their target audience, which is around the teen age although many out of this age range favor pop.

Introducing The Artist I Have Chosen..

Static Revenger

The artist named Static Revenger (Dennis White) is an American record producer, video director and a well-known DJ who is based in Los Angeles. He is a worldwide artist and is very well known within the music industry. He has worked with other well-known artists such as Swedish house mafia, Madonna and Shakira. I have chosen this artist, because I find his music very upbeat and interesting, as there are many different instruments and beats within the music. I also feel that because of the tempo and beat that I could create very interesting and creative music video. The target audience for this artist is 16-25 age range, as well as anyone that enjoys listening to upbeat music. Static Revenger appeals to this age range because his music is the type of music that you would enjoy at a party, therefore this age range is the most popular to party.

Luciana Caporaso

In the song, which my group and I have chosen to create a music video for, Luciana caporaso is featured within. She is an English singer and songwriter, who has collaborated with many other artists, such as Taio Cruz and Bodyrox.

Richard Vission

This artist is also featured within the song, which my group has chosen. Richard Vission is also an American record producer, DJ and remixer.

Mind Map Of Pop-Electro Genre

This is a mind map of key features within the pop-electro genre.

Analysis of a Digipak and Magazine cover

Through researching into both album covers and magazine covers, i have learnt many things. Firstly the album covers only contain images of the artist themselves, this is to show the artist as a style icon. Also through looking at the album covers for the music genre of pop, i have noticed that the colours for the covers are very bright and vibrant, this could be to make the album stand out, as well as to portray the image of the artist's character. The clothing in these album covers are very limited, in the cover of Katy Perry there is suggestive pictures. In the Rihanna album cover the colours are pink, reds, whites and purple, this suggests the idea of the music being feminine.
In the magazine cover of the Seventeen, the page is based around Rihanna. The centre of the page is a photo of Rihanna where she has been made to look beautiful and innocent. There is text on the cover such as 'Rihanna Style Star Of The Year' which suggests that the magazine are portraying Rihanna as a role model.

Feedback on filming the busted remake

During my previous media studies lessons, as a group we have been working together, to create a remake of the busted song 'Thats what I go to school for'. This has been very enjoyable but has also been very difficult.

Within filming, my role was to play one of the girls in the classroom, and a background dance in the main scene. However when it came to the day of filming people decided they didn't want to be certain roles, hence why i had to step in and be the girl who smiles and gets rejected. This obviously made it difficult for us as a group, as people who we were relying on, weren't co-operating. Also many people in the group forgot their costumes, which also made our group smaller and roles had to be edited.

I found my role fairly easy, however i also helped the directors in areas, where I thought certain lighting wasn't appropriate, or that there was a piece of filming equipment in the background of a shot etc.

I thought the editing process wasn't as hard for this task, as it was for the task where I made a "Girls Aloud" remake, which is also on my blog. This was because i was familiar with the lip syncing idea, and also felt comfortable using the editing software. There were times however, where I found it difficult trying to match both the music and the video, therefore, i ended up using different clips in-between to fill out the gaps in the timing. However to do this, i worked alongside watching the busted video on youtube, and made sure mine was following the same tracks.

Overall, I have enjoyed making this busted video, as I think we have all worked well together as a group, and have produced a good video as a result.

Lip Sync Video

Here is the video which we produced for our lip sync project. We found this project fairly hard, as we had to completely change our idea because one of our members were ill. Therefore this video does not reflect our ability of lip syncing.
