Music Video Planning

Our music video will be both narrative and performance, however it will be majority performance. As a group we have worked together to create a visual style for this video. The mise-en-scene for this music video will include props such as:-

  • Big headphones- to express the idea of music, also because these are very popular amongst the age range for our target audience.
  • Big sunglasses- to enhance the features of the face, and make a distinct difference between certain scenes.
  • Big jewellery- because this is fashionable at the moment, and fashion is often associated with music videos.
We will also wear vibrant and bright colours to add more energy to the music video and make it look more interesting. The costumes which we will wear will be random and edgy, this is to add to the energetic feel, and make the people in the music video stand out from everyday people.

We will use a range of camera shots throughout this music video, such as:-

  • Medium shot
  • Close up
  • Wide shot
  • two/three shot
  • high-angled shot
  • low-angled shot
  • panning shots
  • over the shoulder shots
  • Birds eye view
We will use various camera shots to make the music video look more interesting and creative for the audience.

There will be alot of different editing techniques used within our music video, as editing is very popular for the genre we are working in. The editing techniques which we will use will be:-

  • Split screen- where the screen will be divided into four sections.
  • Editing from the green screen
  • Cut
  • Crosscut
  • Neon colours within the scenes
  • slow motion clips- blended together
  • flashing images
  • Text
  • flashing text
The cast of our group is:-

  • Amie
  • Tara
  • Amber
  • Myself (Jess)
The locations which we chosen to film in are:-

  • Green Screen- to allow us to have background images which are unique and effective.
  • By a brick wall
  • By Graphitti- this fits in with the genre which we are working in, we also think that graphitti is often linked to the teenage years, and therefore our target audience.
  • In the woods- this is a different and unique location for this music video, and it allows us to be creative and have various shots in a different location.
  • Down a high street- to create the effect of a busy town with lots of people surrounding.
  • On a field
  • Places in the town park
As a group, we have decided to film in various locations, as we think this will be effective for our music video because it wont looks repetitive and boring. We have chosen to film during the daylight because this means the backing lighting will be bright and will compliment both our costumes and editing effects.

These ideas link to our research because we have took the other music videos into consideration, in order to produce our own ideas.

I think our planning links in with various different media theories. I think our planning links to the Blumler & Katz theory (1974) because of the fact that our music video will allow the audience to have a type of escape from the pressures of everyday life. Also I think they will be able to improve personal relationships through speaking about our music video. Some people may even find personal identity and find links between their own personalities, and the overt personalities which we will present in the video. Another theory which I think our planning links to is the Stuart Hall 'Encoding/Decoding' theory of (1980). This is because of the oppositional position, due to the fact that our genre of our music video is Pop-Electro, which is a subgenre of two main music genres. Therefore the pop genre followers, will expect to see more pop like elements within our music video, however the electro followers will expect more electro elements. As a group, we have discussed this  fact and decided that we will include both of these elements equally.
